1. Improve the SEO of your products & collections
SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization, is the key tool you can use in order to rank high in search engines. This allows you to bring organic traffic to your website and not rely on ads.
Each product title and product description should be written with SEO in mind, meaning that relevant keywords must appear in both. Check out our full tutorials on how to create a) an SEO-optimized product title & b) an SEO-optimized product description.
For your keyword research, we suggest you use free tools such as Keyword Planner – where you can type in a few keywords from your niche and you'll get many more keywords related to those. This tool also gives you monthly search volumes, insights about your competition, audience, etc. You can even filter different languages and countries when you make this research.
Make sure to take your time, watch some tutorials online on how to improve your SEO skills and better understand this practice. We guarantee, this will be one of the most valuable tools you have for growing your business online, slowly but surely!
2. Open a blog section on your Shopify store
Adding a blog section to your Shopify store is a great strategy. A well-written article can bring thousands of readers every month to your website.
This will help your website grow in authority, so it will gradually rank higher in Google searches. Moreover, you can add links to your products in your blog articles, sending readers to the store section of your website.
In order to gain traffic and sales through your blog, you will need a combination of copyrighting skills and SEO. Write about your niche, and about what you know best. Actually provide useful information people are interested in.
For example, if you sell handmade jewelry, write about that: the process, the struggles, the materials you use, the tools that you need in order to make jewelry, etc. You also have the option to add photos in your blog posts, so make the most of this feature as well.
Blogs can bring massive traffic to your website, and people will browse through your products if they found the information useful. Be consistent. Keep writing regularly, and stick to relevant content in your niche.
3. Use a fast-loading theme and don't add too many apps to your Shopify Store
We have worked with so many Shopify store owners that had struggled with ranking their websites and products. One of the most common problems was the website speed (the loading time of a product page or website overall).
Make sure to choose a Shopify theme that loads fast, especially for mobile. If your website performs poorly on mobile devices, it won’t even show up in Google search results, even if you have the best SEO in the world.
We can recommend Dawn, which is one of the free Shopify themes, and the Boost paid theme, when it comes to speed. At this point, Shopify has updated all of their free themes, so many of them will work fast on both mobile and desktop. Don't overload them with videos and huge image files, though.
Another thing you need to consider is that every app you add to your store will actually lower the speed of your website. Each app has a code that needs to run in order for it to work. And this adds time to the page loading speed.
You need to keep only the most useful apps to your store, the ones you cannot do without. Delete the rest. And always perform a speed check after you add new apps to your website.
4. Use Google Console, Analytics & Merchant
Make your products appear faster and for free in Google search.
In case you did not hear about Google Console, Google Analytics, and Google Merchant you need to start learning now. These tools inform Google about your website. In turn, you can get insights from Google about your store's performance, and use this information to improve it.
You need to start by submitting your sitemap to Google and things will start moving from there.
Google Merchant is the tool you use to have your products appear in Google Shopping. After setting up Google Merchant, you need to make sure that your products are compliant, that you put them into the right category, and select all the relevant conditions in order for your products to be eligible for Google Shopping.
This might sound as gibberish for many of you and that is why we are going to film some tutorials about these tools and how to use them (links coming soon).
5. Invest time in your social media presence
People spend on average at least 2-3 hours a day on social media. Whether you like social media platforms or not, they are amazing tools for free traffic. You just need to find/build your community.
Start with the platforms you use most, but don't be afraid to experiment with all the other ones. You'll never know which platform works best for your business until you try it. Thousands of businesses grew at an amazing pace thanks to Tik-Tok, for example. What will be the platform that does it for you?
Remember, video is being pushed by most social media platforms right now. This means that you should invest some time in creating video content.
Start with simple video ideas, like showcasing some of your products. Then try to create short videos on how you make your products, how you source them, how you package them, how you ship orders, and you might be surprised to see how many people are actually interested in that. Sales can be generated by small social media accounts too.
